Based on the school counselor scenario below, determine the most appropriate
rating for standard 4. If the rating is less than distinguished, when you click the correct rating,
you will see suggestions for improvement.
From the School Data Profile, Ms. Kopec has identified her school’s student
achievement gaps and created a resource center for teachers to help with addressing barriers to
learning related to those gaps. Once each month she highlights one of the resources at a staff
meeting. In addition to working with teachers, Ms. Kopec also collaborates and consults with other
student support services staff, parents and community agencies to create program plans that support
students’ academic, career, and personal/social development. She spends about 80% of her time
utilizing the guidance curriculum, individual student planning strategies, and preventive and
responsive services to meet student needs. She reviews her school counseling program plans regularly
to see if any adjustments are needed. Not only does she model effective communication skills, she
also promotes the development of effective communication skills throughout the school community
through student, staff and parent activities and written communications.
Ms. Kopec is already a very strong school counselor. The primary
things that she could do for a higher rating on the evaluation rubric are to continue to work
towards mitigating barriers to student learning and to share at the district, state and/or
national levels results data that demonstrate the impact of the school counseling program.
