Based on the school counselor scenario below, determine the most appropriate
rating for standard 5. If the rating is less than distinguished, when you click the correct rating,
you will see suggestions for improvement.
Ms. Soni has been a school counselor for about 20 years and recognizes
the importance of continuing to develop and keep her school counseling skills current. The ASCA
National Model had not been developed when she got her master’s degree, so she has made a point to
attend face-to-face and online professional development to enhance her understanding of implementing
in connection with the NC Professional School Counselor Standards. She also tries to attend the
annual NCSCA school counselor conference, focusing on sessions that address identified needs of
her students. She also seeks new ideas to implement through listservs, web sites, and collaboration
with students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders. To help her with all of this, she maintains
a written plan of data driven goals and strategies for effective delivery of her school counseling
program.
Ms. Soni is already doing a very good job as a school counselor.
The primary things that she could do for a higher rating on the evaluation rubric are to be sure
she is assessing the results of her work and using those results and feedback to further enhance
her program. It would also be good for her to share her knowledge with others at the school,
district, state and/or national levels.
