Read the scenarios below and answer the questions. You may choose to do the teacher scenario, the principal scenario, or both.

A teacher's perspective

  1. It is April, and Mr. Johnson, the school counselor, is ready to make recommendations for the science course for the next school year. He decides to use EVAAS data from the Academic Preparedness Report. After much consideration, he decides to use the reading report to determine students' readiness for Biology.

Is this a valid use of the results of that report?

    1. No, it is invalid: EVAAS data itself is not reliable.

A principal's perspective

  1. Mr. Burns, the principal of Drip Middle School, is in the process of determining how many EC classes he will need for the upcoming year. He is aware of the EVAAS reports and is trying to decide which report will provide data to assist him in this determination. He decides to use the Academic At Risk Report to identify the lowest 10% of the students in his school as his qualifier.

Will his intended use of the data from this report be valid for identifying the number of classes for exceptional children he will need?

    1. Yes: The lowest 10% would represent the target EC population.
