Focus Characteristics Needs
Stage 1: The Survival Stage

Teachers in this stage are focused on self. They want to know:

  • How am I doing?
  • Will I make it?
  • Do others approve of my performance?

Novice teachers seek approval from school administrators, other teachers, parents, the students, and their mentors.

  • Limited in teaching options and strategies
  • Difficulties in analyzing and problem solving
  • Concrete thinkers
  • Inability to talk the language of teaching
  • Modeling; opportunities to observe
  • Masterful, empathetic mentor
  • Help in planning and resource gathering
Stage 2: The Task Stage

Teachers in this stage are focused on time and task. They want to know:

  • Is there a better way?
  • How can I do all that is expected of me?
  • How can I improve this?
  • Broader range of skills
  • Different teaching methods
  • Teaching and planning done in a step-by-step fashion
  • More flexible and adaptable
  • Increase successful experiences
  • Observe other approaches
  • Recognize and give feedback
  • Reflective journaling
Stage 3: The Impact Stage

Teachers in this stage are focused on student learning. They want to know:

  • Are students learning?
  • How can I raise achievement levels?
  • Is this meaningful to my students?
  • Operates abstractly and concretely
  • Can handle change
  • Original, creative thinker
  • Can identify and solve problems
  • More autonomy
  • Permission to grow
  • Opportunities to learn
  • Recognize and validate growth
